What it is: writing about writing, beauty, art, power, mundane happenings, and living in the world. For better or for worse, it is a newsletter about what it is I think about.

About me: immigrant and child of. Wrote debut novel All This Could Be Different which was a finalist for prizes including the 2022 National Book Award, have organized around climate and immigration and mutual aid, have founded some things including the mutual aid group Bed-Stuy Strong. Born in India, grew up in Oman, India, Canada (super briefly), before immigrating to the U.S. You can find more of my non-newsletter writing at smathewss.com. I live, most of the time, in Brooklyn, NY. My name is Sarah Thankam Mathews. My middle name: thun like thunder, gum like gumdrop.

I’ve written thot puddings about: things as varied as the pain of having a crush (with some bonus dunking on therapyspeak), the genesis of my first published novel and the book I had to give up on before I wrote it, AI and books, the history of the paperback book, being a good domme to your brain, my relationship to my mothertongue Malayalam, new year’s resolutions and artistic practice, a piece called watch the throne on the British monarchy and Aimé Cesaire and Bengali revolutionary Pritilata Waddedar, and how I read a novel.

I also use this newsletter to share updates about new pieces, book news, and classes I offer periodically. A majority of posts are free, some are paid. Paying subscribers help me make my livelihood and devote more time to my work.

Thank you for spending some time with my words.

xx
